All You Need to Know About Etchant for Mild Steel

One of the key products we offer is etchant for mild steel. This product can be used to create an ideal surface for aluminium, stainless steel or copper plating. It can also be used as a pre-treatment prior to painting or powder coating operations. When etching for mild steel, you have to take a few factors into consideration.

What Is the Thickness of the Material?

The thicker the material, the more power is needed to cut through it. For example, if you want to etch mild steel with a thickness of 1mm then it will require approximately 10Watts per square centimetre (W/cm2). However, if you are cutting mild steel that is thicker than 1mm then more power will be needed.

What Is the Required Depth of the Etched Area?

This will depend on your application. However, as a rule of thumb – we recommend that for most applications the etched depth should not exceed 10% of the total thickness of the mild steel used. If you want to etch mild steel with a depth greater than 10% of its overall thickness then you would need more than 20Watt/cm2 (more than 200 joules per square centimetre) and this can only be achieved using laser or chemical etching methods rather than UV light which causes minimal damage to materials (less than 5%).

How Is Mild Steel Produced

Mild steel is produced by heating iron ore at very high temperatures until it melts into molten liquid form. The molten liquid then passes through rollers which squeeze out excess oxygen from the mixture leaving only carbon atoms behind. This process is known as smelting. Carbon atoms bond with oxygen atoms in the air forming carbon dioxide (CO2), which escapes into atmosphere where it contributes to global warming and climate change.

What Does Etchant for Mild Steel do?

Etching removes a thin layer from a metal’s surface and thereby creates a smooth even layer that leaves no other markings on the metal’s surface apart from the etched design. An etched design can give your metal piece an added polished look which can make it stand out from other metal pieces that weren’t etched.

Etching also makes it easier for you to clean off any dirt or debris that may have accumulated on your mild steel piece over time without any damage being done to it’s surface quality. In addition to this, etching leaves behind no other markings besides those which were intentionally etched onto its surface so it will look just like new after.

Etching for Mild Steel Is Used for Many Applications

Etching is one of the most versatile manufacturing processes available to designers today. In the process, parts are produced from a flat steel sheet by selectively dissolving a metal surface to create a design, pattern or text.

In wet etching, the metal is submerged in a bath of the acid solution. When dry etching, the chemical solution is sprayed onto the surface of the steel using an automated machine.

Mild steel can be used in many applications including structural components such as I-Beams and automotive parts such as axle housings and drive shafts, as well as pipes and tubing for plumbing applications.
